Logbook Tres Hombres (May 13, 2012)
From Caribbean Winter to European Spring.. by Elise
People who know me can probably imagine how I will look like if i tell them that we are experiencing a temperature difference of about 20 degrees the last month. For the people who know me a little less (or not at all) I'll give a short impression of my cold weather gear of the last days.. Keep in mind that I'm cold quickly and the others on board might experience this European spring different.
The decision to dress really warm I've made within seconds after waking up. When I get out of my bunk a cold shiver rolls over my back. I'm really happy that I did decide to leave my socks on last watch, my feet are still warm.. I takes me a few minutes to put my three layers of tights and trousers on. My 3 shirts go a little faster, I left them in a package on my sea chest. After that I now know (takes a few days of practice) how to put myself in a fleece sweater, fleece vest and woolen sweater and a jacket without troubles within a minute. Than, as finishing touch on my amazing outfit for tonight; my head, boots , shawl and Dirk his leather gloves. I'm lucky that it has not been raining for the last few days, otherwise one last layer would have joined this outfit. My rain coverall.. and I'm not sure if that would have fit.
The temperature is something we all have to get used to here, but this does not keep me, my fellow crew members and the Tres Hombres away from our duty to arrive three more times in three different ports. This to discharge the chocolate, go to Oostende to attend the festival and finally arrive in the port of Den Helder to unload the ship and prepare her for the summer season.
The sun is rising again. It looks like a promising sunny Sunday. It will be a good afternoon to warm and prepare myself for the next night watch again.
Warm greetings
Elise,
deckhand.
