Logbook Tres Hombres (April 17, 2012)
Sailing into the night (part 6 of a day) by Elise Kossen, trainee a/b
After a marvelous dinner cooked by Anne (Port watch) Lentils with rice, sardines and plantain the change of watch (at 8 pm) goes quickly. Port side is dismissed and you take over the helm from Toby. This means you will steer for the next hour and then someone else will take over. Anne Flore will do the galley clean-up tonight. The navigation lights are turned on and now the ship and her crew are ready for another night at sea. It is a beautiful night, there is wind and the full moon makes it easy to see the sails and flag for the wind direction. A little more wind would be nice tonight, but the only one who can take care of that just went to bed, Piet. Speedy Piet gives us wind when we need it by throwing some coins in the water and asking the spirits for some help.
It is a little chilly outside but because you are wearing you rain trousers and a sweater the cold won't be a problem tonight. Everyone of starboard watch gets lost in his or her thoughts and it turns quit. While you are standing at the wheel you only hear the sound of the wind and the waves..
At 11.45 pm, after spending some sail handling and some hours thinking and daydreaming on deck, it is time to wake up port watch again. You climb down the Focs'l and find your way in the dark to the beds of Charlie and Anne to wake them up, while Dirk is waking up the people sleeping in the aft part of the ship. They will have the 'dog watch' tonight and prepare the dough for the fresh bread tomorrow morning.
For you it is time to get some rest again. After Jorne dismisses starboard you go quickly to your bunk. Than you struggle to get rid of your rain trousers and sweater but finally you find yourself in bed, tired and ready for some sleep.
Greetings & love,
Elise Kossen
