Logbook Tres Hombres (April 19, 2012)
A bliss Sunday by Elise Kossen trainee a/b
This Sunday, yesterday, was such an amazing day. I would like to share it with the whole wide world!
We have seen and experienced really nice and beautiful things before but yesterday was one of my favorites.
Sunday a rest day. During the last hours of the night watch (around 6 am) Anne Flore was sitting on the galley roof, enjoying the sunrise. I was making breakfast, baking chocolate cake, pancakes, bread and making coffee and tea when I heard. WHALES!
So, I runned out (first turning the stove off) and started gazing at the horizon. And indeed after a few minutes I saw (far away) a whale jumping out of the water and when it fell down again creating a huge splash. WOW!! Whole starboard watch was excitedly running around looking for cameras and binoculars. I went back to the galley but after a few minutes I heard again WHALE! So again, turning the stove off, running to starboardside of the ship and just as I was putting myself in a good whalewatch position I saw something which made my day.. About one boatlenght (+- 30 metres) away from the ship there was a huge whale jumping out of the water! So close, so beautiful! It was just for a short moment but it made a huge impression on me. They call this (I heard later) a 'praying whale' and it is not often people see this (you need a really happy whale to let it jump out) we are so lucky!
That was only the start of our Sunday 15th of April. After this whale experience the galley duties did not really work out any more for me. The swell made my pancake mixture fall all over the stove while I was making coffee. Because I first needed to clean this mess up I forgot about the birthday cake I was making for Mott. It got burned.. but anyway the start of the day was great.
After a nice Sunday-afternoon-chilling-session the sunset was beautiful again. A bright orange bowl of light slowly moving into the ocean. But more beautiful (yes indeed that is possible) I found the big (huge) rainbow on the opposite side of the sunset. It was actually a double rainbow and I could see it from one end to the other. Even a second one appeared above after a while. It was an amazing sight the colors of the rainbow(s) with the gray / orange clouds in the back and on the other side the orange / red sunset.
What an experiences again, a fantastic day!
