Lunch (part 4 of a day), by Elise Kossen, trainee

The smell coming out of the galley makes you hungry and you are happy when at 13.00 Dirk calls "lunch is ready!". One (un)lucky soul has to stay at the wheel (we don't have auto pilot) and eats when the others are finished. This time it is the captain himself who takes the wheel and sends us to the galley to enjoy lunch.

It is rush hour in the small but cosy galley. People looking for plates, their cups and the few spoons we have (someone is hiding them in his or her bunk, or are they just disappearing together with the dirty dish wash water into the ocean?) Lunch today is spinach-pasta salad. Yummy! The trick of eating on board is; to keep your plate in your hand while scooping the food in your mouth while moving with the swell. All this while keeping a close look out for your cup which is on the table so you could grab it when it starts sliding away.

After lunch (13.30) it is wake up time. See if you can wake up the other watch as nice as Marina did to you this morning. This works out pretty well. After the wake-ups it is time for you and the other starboarders to wait on the poop deck for Port watch to finish lunch and gather around on the poop deck too.

Elise,
Deckhand
Elise Kossen, Trainee a/b
