Trainee program Tres Hombres
Learning by doing, with a certificate to show for it!
On board the Tres Hombres you’ll not feel like a passenger. Indeed, you will be part of our crew!
You join us as an “ordinary seaman”, or rather on the lowest rung of the ladder. The first things you’ll learn are safety precautions, ship maintenance, taking the helm, lookout and sail handling. After that, you can aspire to become an Able Seaman, performing acts like Marlinespike Seamanship (Ropework), basic navigation and manoeuvring under sail. Eventually, after a sufficient amount of time served on board, you’ll be experienced enough to become boatswain, which entails leadership, rigging, sail sewing, ship carpentry and square rigging. Your education will not be provided by books, but by the hard-won teachings of practice.
After showing sufficient knowledge and responsibility in the many fields of seamanship, you’ll be awarded a certificate of rank, to prove your prowess as a sailor. The following certificates may be attained: “ordinary seaman”, “able seaman”, “boatswain”, “second mate”, “chief mate” and “captain”. These certificates are not (yet) officially acknowledged by governments, but may reflect on your experience as a seaman to future employers.
